BTR: In My Opinion…

An interesting new concept is coming to Highland next week. The Highland Main Street organization is sponsoring a Pop Up Gallery at 2427 Ridge Road next Thursday, April 21st from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Pop Up Galleries are a new way to display local art, while showcasing available commercial rental space. The local artists participating in the event are Judith Mayer, Melissa Washburn and Linda Eyermann. For more information, as well as links to websites of the artists, see https://beyondtheregion.wordpress.com/2011/04/15/pop-up-gallery-comes-to-highland-april-21st/.

They say that compromise creates agreements in which no one is really happy. Exhibit A…the budget deal to fund the rest of the federal government for the rest of the 2011 fiscal year, ending in September.

Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels this week broke his long silence on the sweeping immigration bill under consideration by the Indiana General Assembly (https://beyondtheregion.wordpress.com/2011/04/14/daniels-immigration-should-focus-on-employers-not-police-post-tribune/) The Governor believes the bill should focus more on employers of illegal workers, rather than the law enforcement angle. Strategic move to distance him from Tea Party Presidential Primary activists, or a possible sign that he is not going to run for President after all?

If he is going to run, Governor Daniels may have to explain his position to politicos in Georgia, which yesterday passed an Arizona-style immigration bill, sending it to the desk of the state’s new Republican Governor. Apparently, the Rio Grande has now shifted east to the Suwannee River.

Memo to Tony Bennett: The Illinois Senate yesterday passed unanimously a series of education reforms, making changes in such areas as teacher tenure and teacher evaluation. The bill that passed was one crafted through intensive work with education reform activists and the state’s teachers unions. Changes can come about when you work with, rather than run over, teachers and their unions.

For history buffs, I would like to recommend a new book, written by David A. Nichols, titled Eisenhower 1956. The book chronicles President Dwight Eisenhower’s efforts to deal with a major war in the Middle East where he opposed three major U.S. allies, the Soviet crackdown against Hungarian freedom fighters, and two major illnesses, all while running for reelection in 1956. Eisenhower, whose Presidency has had mixed reviews by historians, delivers a masterful performance in leadership, as he bounces from crisis to crisis. The book shines a light on a fascinating, but little explored, part of our recent post-World War II history.

In a far cry from Eisenhower’s leadership, in this week’s episode of “Celebrity Presidential Apprentice”, “maybe” GOP Presidential candidate Donald Trump, now tied for first among likely Republican Presidential candidates in a new CNN poll, told The New York Times “…I am thinking of saying on the live finale of ‘The Apprentice’ on May 22 that in a few days I will be making an announcement about my decision…” This announcement has now made Trump the prohibitive favorite to win the GOP Presidential Television Sweeps Primary in May.

Speaking of Birthers, the Arizona (yes the same Arizona who brought us the constitutionally solid anti-immigration bill) Senate this week passed a “Birther” bill, requiring Presidential candidates to prove they are eligible under the Constitution to serve as President of the United States. As I discussed in my column last month (https://beyondtheregion.wordpress.com/2011/03/18/btr-in-my-opinion-6/) this type of legislation is being introduced in numerous state legislatures, including Indiana. Clearly, this interesting state intervention into the federal domain (oops, just like…well…immigration?) opens the specter of the 2012 Presidential election becoming “The Year of the Litigator”. Who knows…perhaps another Presidential election to be decided by the U.S. Supreme Court?

In other state election law news…indicted Indiana Secretary of State Charlie White announced this week that he will not participate in the Indiana Recount Commission’s deliberations on whether he is ineligible to serve in office. Under Indiana election law, the Secretary of State is the Chairman and deciding vote on the Commission, which hears cases involving recounts and election contests (like…maybe… challenging that a certain Presidential candidate is ineligible to serve as President because allegedly he was not born in the United States). White’s initial contest petition, filed by the Indiana Democratic Party after his November election, was initially voted down in December by the Recount Commission. An Indiana judge has since ruled that the petition should have not been dismissed and the matter has gone back to the Recount Commission. White, who was indicted for voter fraud earlier this year, would be unable to rule on his own case, pursuant to Indiana law. Good to see that there is election law that he will follow.

To those who say “elections don’t matter”, I would guess there are 48 teachers and assorted other office and administrative personnel in Crown Point who would say they are wrong. All face potential layoff if the Crown Point school referendum before voters on May 3rd fails to pass.

Speaking of elections mattering, as the House Republicans approve the dramatic 2012 federal budget plan offered by Representative Paul Ryan, Newsweek highlights in this week’s issue the philosophic influence of Ayn Rand in the GOP/ Tea Party movement (https://beyondtheregion.wordpress.com/2011/04/15/war-on-the-weak-newsweek/). A mid-20th Century novelist-philosopher, Rand is credited with the philosophic belief that capitalists, not workers, are creators of wealth. The article quotes from Rand’s influential 1950’s novel Atlas Shrugged, saying “…The man at the top of the intellectual pyramid contributes the most to all those below him, but gets nothing except his material payment, receiving no intellectual bonus from others to add to the value of his time. The man at the bottom who, left to himself, would starve in his hopeless ineptitude, contributes nothing to those above him, but receives the bonus of all of their brains…” According to Newsweek, one of the GOP/ Tea Party disciples of Rand’s thinking is none other than…Representative Paul Ryan.

Big BTR: IMO shout out to the Bulls and the Blackhawks as their prospective playoff runs begin.

See you next week…

UPDATE: A copy of the Arizona Birther Bill: http://www.azleg.gov/legtext/50leg/1r/bills/hb2177s.pdf  But the upside is that if a candidate can’t produce a long form birth certificate, they can use a “Circumcision Certificate”.
